If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you mix outdoor exploration with high-end comforts, look no further than the heart of the Mohawk Valley. We just wrapped up an incredible trip to the Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort, and it easily earned a top spot on our list of the Best Upstate NY Family Getaways.

Whether you’re traveling with a couple of kids or managing a beautifully chaotic large family crowd, finding a destination that keeps everyone happy can be a tall order. But Herkimer completely delivered, combining hands-on outdoor adventure with the ultimate luxury family glamping experience.
Here is a breakdown of our experience—from the thrill of the open rock quarry to the complete relaxation of KOA’s Deluxe Cabins.
Right across the street from the resort sits Miners’ Village, the gateway to the world-famous Herkimer Diamond Mines. Herkimer Diamonds are naturally faceted, each having eighteen facets and two points.

When you arrive at Miner’s Village, purchase your daily mining wristbands and rent or buy equipment at the Village Hall. All guests need to come prepared with safety eyewear, gloves, and closed-toe shoes. You may also bring any additional equipment, such as chisels, screens, small shovels, buckets, and other hammers. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather and bring sunscreen.

There are three ways you can hunt for Herkimer Diamonds at the mines.
Sifting: You can simply sift through loose dirt and surface rocks. Just look down, and you may spot something shiny glinting in the sun. Sifting for Herkimer diamonds is perfect for little ones. Bring along a plastic shovel and sifter (like the ones that come with your sand toys), and your kids will be all set for a day of diamond hunting.
Breaking Rocks: Use a mallet and a chisel to split open large pieces of dolostone to find a hidden pocket of pristine, untouched crystals.
The Sluice: Purchase a bag of mining rough and head over to the Sluice Station. Watch crystals, fossils, and gemstones materialize instantly as the water runs.
The absolute best part? Everything you find is yours to keep! Seeing the kids’ faces light up as they unburied their own treasures was pure magic. We left with little baggies filled with gems and memories of a screen-free afternoon of discovery.

After you have collected your Herkimer Diamonds and gemstones, head over to the Artisan Center, where you can create your own custom jewelry. You can also shop for everything from jewelry to gems to t-shirts at the Trading Post. Then, grab a quick bite to eat at The Canteen.
After a long day of breaking rocks in the sun, we couldn’t wait to head back to our KOA Deluxe Cabin, which was the definition of luxury family glamping. These modern, beautifully structured lodges feel like boutique outdoor hotels. With a clever layout featuring a main bedroom, cozy bunk beds, and a comfy futon, there was plenty of room for everyone. Plus, there were all the comforts of home, including a full bathroom and air conditioning.

A partial kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, stovetop, and coffee maker made for easy family breakfasts. There was even a coffee maker – don’t forget to bring ground coffee and extra filters.
Each deluxe cabin features its own private outdoor patio, complete with a gas grill, patio furniture, and a fire ring. We spent our nights grilling up dinner, roasting gooey s’mores, and having quality family time under the massive canopy of stars.

What takes this campground to resort status is everything else packed onto the manicured grounds. When we weren’t mining, the kids were cooling off in the unique, diamond-shaped swimming pool, playing games in The Garden, or watching tubers lazily float down the creek. The staff runs daily activities like tie-dyeing and camp games, making it stand out among the Best Upstate NY Family Getaways for creating a true summer community vibe.
If you are looking for an itinerary that perfectly balances outdoor adventure, hands-on science learning, and relaxation, put Herkimer on your radar.
