Math nerds know Pi is 3.14, but pizza pie lovers are ready to celebrate National Pi Day the way they know best — by devouring a slice (or two). When it comes to pizza though, what toppings reign supreme? According to a recent survey, 80% of Americans say pepperoni is to pizza like peanut butter is to jelly.

The survey commissioned by the makers of Hormel Pepperoni and conducted online by The Harris Poll among over 2,000 U.S. adults, reveals that pepperoni is America’s favorite pizza topping, with Americans being more than twice as likely to choose it above the next most popular option, sausage. It’s no surprise that the pizza emoji features pepperoni.

For nearly three-quarters of Americans, pizza has been one of their comfort foods during the pandemic. Whether from the pizzeria or homemade, parents with children under 18 say making homemade pizza has become a favorite activity. It’s a meal that never gets old.

“We are happy to hear consumers tell us what we have believed to be true, that Americans love pizza, especially pepperoni pizza,” said Shane Ward, senior brand manager. “At Hormel Foods, we believe food has the power to bring people closer together, and as America’s No. 1 pepperoni brand, we’re thrilled to keep the pizza-making traditions alive for consumers nationwide, even as we remain distanced during the pandemic.”
